Jeri - thanks for doing so much interesting stuff. It's really quite impressive. If I can offer a comment, you had a really short video on youtube with a homemade transistor (?!) A longer more elaborated version would be deeply appreciated.

Thankyou. I've been trying to work out how to trace the head connections to get this to work. I really fancy a floppy disc based mellotron.

Thankyou again.

I am really interested in this project however, am I understanding the implementation correctly? You connected a Tape playback / record head to the armature of the disk drive to get the audio to play off the disk?

Awesome Jerry! I was going to ask if you could setup a keyboard and to set the head position and make a kind of synth. Maybe record samples on each of the tracks and select the track with a keyboard. You could get frequency modulation too by quickly changing the rotation rate with keys as well.

Using the HD would also be neat, but I really like the floppy trick. Did you try recording PWM or PCM digitaly?

Is there some club meeting in Austin you attend? I am very near Austin and would love to Geek out with you and Fat Man. My email is dfowler - you know what goes here - uchobby.com

Awesome videos, Jeri. As an aspiring young engineer, I wonder if you might have some words to share about staying organized, goal setting, pacing yourself ... basically, managing yourself. I am enthusiastic and love to tackle problems, analyze, focus, and work hard but often find myself getting maybe 75% through finishing something off well enough for others to use. Sometimes I get that "man, why am I trying to do *this*?" feeling and then lose motivation. I guess you could say I'm short on follow-through and it's catching up with me! You seem to have lots of follow-through and manage yourself well. Are these traits that can be learned? Or am I hopeless?? Keep up the great work. I am learning a lot!

I think most Geiger counters cannot detect Alpha, but since Americium emits (much less) Gamma also, it can make some clicks on a counter - the Alpha would be a steady stream however.
I'd look into Thorium mantles and Radium/Uranium paints&glazes for Beta/Gamma test sources.

I think the iron is already in the pentoxide form, and cant be damaged by heat, so why not try burning off all the pesky plastic and collect the Fe from the ash with a supermagnet?
Wish I had the idea to do this (VHS-Bonfire) as a celebration of EarthHour last Saturday!

Hi Jeri,

I'm CJ :)

I'm a natural language engineer and also work in search engine optimisation. Anyway, I signed a pledge where I said I would write about a woman in tech on my blog on the 24th of March 2009.

I'm late because it's the 25th (here in Oz anyway) but I wrote about you. I posted it just now, let me know if there are any inaccuracies so I can change them.

Keep on playing with wires.
